Dustin Poirier doesn’t really care what Islam Makhachev thinks about his worthiness to the title shot. The ‘Diamond’ showcased his masterclass at the UFC 299 by knocking out Benoit-Saint Denis in the second round. After his victory, Poirier asked for only one thing: a run at the title shot. Islam Makhachev agreed to the terms however, he termed Poirier to be unworthy of the title run. But since he had no fighters to fight so he would agree with his fight request.

“I know Dustin does not deserve the title fight, but we don’t have any option right now,” said Makhachev in an interview with MMAJUNKIE. His words were a bit rash towards the former interim lightweight champion. However, despite Makhachev’s efforts to break Poirier’s through his words, ‘Diamond’ is firm in his stance for the title fight, it seems like it’s not easy to break ‘Diamond’ after all.

Islam Makhachev termed Dustin Poirier to be unworthy and he is doing a favor by giving him a chance to fight for the title. “Everybody is busy. I want to fight. I want to fight three times this year. I have to call out someone, and Poirier is free now,” said Makhachev. According to Makhachev, Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira deserve it more, however, they are busy with UFC 300 and they won’t be able to get ready in time to fight him.

Makhachev’s words might have been intended to break Poirier’s spirit, In a recent conversation with the ‘MMAJUNKIE’, Poirier was asked about his opinion on Makhahev’s ‘Unworthy’ jibe, Porier was unfazed by  Makhachev’s words. “That’s on him.”I’ve done more in the sport of mixed martial arts than he has. I’ve been around a long time. I was doing this before it was cool, and I’m still here. Still here doing it at the highest level. I can beat anybody in the world, and I hope he’s next”

He further added, “I’ve done everything else in the sport of mixed martial arts. I’ve created businesses, multiple businesses, I’ve headlined so many cards, I’ve been in the UFC octagon 30 times. My family is set. I’ve done everything I’ve set out to do, but capture the title.”

The undisputed lightweight champion seems to have a big problem with the Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway matchup. Their fight is scheduled to co-main the card for the BMF belt, however, according the the lightweight champ, the match is useless and it’s a drop-down to the UFC 300 potential.

“I don’t want to make people upset, but this is a useless fight for a useless belt. Nobody gains anything from this fight. I have three guys: (Arman) Tsarukyan, (Charles) Oliveira, and Gaethje, but Tsarukyan and Oliveira – I beat them already. But I have Gaethje – he deserves to fight for the title now. This is a good time for him” said Makhachev.
