Back in the day, the flyweight division wasn’t getting the attention it deserved despite having some of the most technically sound fighters. But now, the same is happening to UFC’s glamour division. The heavyweight division has been pretty sluggish over the past few years. Dana White had hoped to change that with the Jon Jones-Tom Aspinall super clash. But alas, the former heavyweight champion left the UFC CEO in a lurch by announcing his retirement earlier this year. Since then, Dana White has been working hard to revitalize the division with a slew of new signings.

Tom Aspinall may stand at the top as the champion, but he’s facing a lack of worthy opponents. But that could change soon because just over a week ago, Dana White signed three new heavyweight fighters—Marek Bujlo, Max Gemenis, and Jose Luiz. But it appears the UFC CEO isn’t done yet. Now, he’s added another fighter to the roster, who’s a regional champion but also has his first matchup already at hand.

Dana White has a fight already lined up for the LFA heavyweight champion
Dana White often uses the Contender Series platform to find new MMA talent. Only those with stacked resumes make their way directly into the UFC. However, for LFA heavyweight champion Denzel Freeman, he appears to have received a pass and signed directly with the UFC, according to his manager. The 33-year-old heavyweight has just 7 pro fights (6 wins and 1 loss) to his name, and in most cases, that’s not enough to get into the UFC directly. But not only did Freeman make his way directly into the promotion, but he also got the chance to make his debut when the UFC makes its debut in Qatar this November.

There’s been a discussion in the fight community about who can possibly end up on the UFC Qatar main event. While that is currently in the works, Dana White has been adding some of the other fights to the card. Now, Denzel Freeman, who hails from Colorado, will be competing on it against another newcomer who’ll also make his debut in Qatar, Marek Bujlo, which will be a fresh new matchup between two new fighters for the fans.
In recent times, the only heavyweight matchup that people were waiting for was between Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones. But Jones avoided that fight for so long that now there is very little hope that it will ever materialize. Let’s hope the new signings Dana White has made will evolve into star contenders in the division, bringing it the attention it deserves. But in the meantime, Jones has plans of his own to help another heavyweight fighter make it into the UFC.
Jon Jones is helping an Olympic gold medalist make it big
2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson recently made his MMA debut, and it was quite a thunderous one. His 1st-round knockout win impressed Jon Jones, who was there cageside at LFA 217. While responding to a fan on social media, the consensus UFC GOAT revealed that he has plans to take Steveson to the top of the MMA world and make a champion out of him in Dana White’s promotion.

“It’s not a matter of if he can, it’s a matter of when. I’ve had many great teammates over the years, but I’ve always said if I would ever be a coach it would have to be a Wrestler who was completely committed to success,” wrote Jon Jones on X. “I found my guy, and I’m excited to add world championship coach to my resume.”
Well, such support from the greatest to ever do it will always come in handy for someone who’s starting out in the MMA world. On the other hand, Gable Steveson will be a welcome addition to the UFC’s heavyweight division, since he can help add a bit of star power in the weight class. But what do you have to say about the recent heavyweight signings by Dana White? Drop your comments below.
