Dana White and Power Slap’s fate in California in the doldrums

Dana White’s Power Slap has been put in a very unorthodox situation. The California State Athletic Commission is about to give its verdict on a very crucial decision on December 9 regarding the approval of Slap fighting as a sport. Dana White needs to get the authorization because Nevada has already given Power Slap a green signal. However unlike Nevada, California’s jurisdiction is confined to boxing, kickboxing, and specific martial arts disciplines such as karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts (MMA).

In contrast to traditional disciplines where contestants must consistently defend themselves, slapfighting introduces a distinctive element by making intelligent defense illegal. This departure places slap-fighting beyond the current regulatory scope in California.

Last year, Nevada approved slap fighting using a wider definition of hits that could cause harm. This showed that different sports commissions interpret rules differently. Now, California has to decide how to handle slapfighting, considering its unique aspects compared to traditional combat sports and martial arts. This decision shows that figuring out the rules for slapfighting can be tricky because it’s different from other sports.

This news came at a time when Power Slap was breaking records on social media for the most viewed sporting promotion, even toppling the likes of the NBA.
