Jiu-Jitsu phenom Gordon Ryan has one of the most polarizing personas in the combat sports world. Unapologetic about his accomplishments, Ryan unabashedly speaks his mind on social media. The 27-year-old has also seen his fair share of PED allegations for having one of the most jacked physiques among competitors in the jiu-jitsu community.
These allegations came up again after his physique starkly deteriorated following a debilitating battle with strep throat. Several fans responded to the images of his depleted body, saying that his jacked form was partly due to taking steroids.
Ryan has always spoken his mind about the issue of PEDs in Jiu-Jitsu athletes and now he has done it again. This time, he can make a claim about the issue thanks to UFC president Dana White.

White revealed the exorbitant amount the UFC spends on USADA testing on an annual basis. According to him, it was as high as seven million dollars. Ryan had a curt response to all the fans calling for testing in Jiu-Jitsu after seeing this news.
Gordon Ryan claps back at fans calling for testing in Jiu-Jitsu
Gordon Ryan shared a post detailing the UFC’s USADA spending on his Instagram story. The post showed the number of tests carried out in the year 2022 and the estimated cost per test based on those factors. This amounted to around $935.
Ryan wrote, “People – Jiu-Jitsu needs random testing.” He continued, “Sick, you paying for it? Because these athletes with cardboard box personalities aren’t bringing in enough cash to support testing. The testing would literally cost more than the athletes generate hahahha.”
While Ryan was poking fun at some fans and his fellow competitors, he does raise a valid point. With the cost of testing being so high, not every organization might be able to afford strict testing for PEDs.
The five-time ADCC world champion knows his sport better than most people clamoring for testing and is playing by its rules. He even took a shot at fans accusing him of succeeding with PEDs after a recent series of positive tests for other athletes.

Ryan responds to Internet trolls
Back in March, five athletes received a three-year USADA suspension after testing positive for banned substances. Ryan used this as an instance to highlight how he beats athletes based on his skill rather than with the help of steroids.
In an Instagram post, he wrote, “Man i guess that stupid “Gordon only wins because steroids” argument just fell apart overnight, huh? Dudes it here on 14 different types of drugs and still can’t touch me. What do you guys have to say now? Let me guess. “[poop]” emojis? bahahah.”
What do you make of Ryan’s recent comments? Do you think USADA testing should be mandatory and more affordable in combat sports?
