Daniel Cormier is one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. He was the second UFC fighter in history to become a concurrent two-division champion by capturing the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles by knocking out heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic in 2018.

However, when asked who he thinks is the greatest MMA fighter of all time, the New Orleans native has answered with one name: former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, whom he rated over Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, and Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a conversation with MMAFighting, the former champion explained the reasons behind his pick.

Cain Velasquez had an illustrious career in the UFC heavyweight division, becoming champion twice. However, much of his career was marred by injuries, sidelining him for large periods. Velasquez used to train at the American Kickboxing Academy in California, along with UFC luminaries like Cormier and former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The UFC commentator stated that anybody who trained with him, including Nurmagomedov, would agree that Velasquez was the greatest fighter when not injured. And this is not the first time Cormier has made these claims. The former UFC champion has maintained that Velasquez is the greatest fighter he has ever seen in numerous interviews over the years.

“I tell you, nobody wanted those Cain Velasquez problems. If that dude was healthy and ready to go, I still believe he was the best fighter. Ask me, ask Khabib [Nurmagomedov], ask the guys that saw him in the gym when he was healthy and he was good, nobody was like Cain,” he told MMAFighting in a YouTube interview.

Cormier has always been supportive of Velasquez and supported his former teammate. And this support would undoubtedly mean a lot, especially now that the California native faces jail time for attempted murder.

Cain Velasquez’s trial date is set for January 2024

Cain Velasquez was charged with attempted murder and other lesser gun charges in 2022. He is alleged to have shot an unintended victim while aiming for the man accused of molesting his son. The former UFC champion was released on bail in November last year and will go to trial in January next year.

And as the date for his trial approaches, Velasquez will be focusing on his legal defense. The American has maintained his innocence throughout the process and is confident that he will be acquitted in court. What do you think about Daniel Cormier’s take on the GOAT debate? Hi, I am Kanishk and I am a UFC Writer at EssentiallySports. I love telling the stories of these magnificent fighters and this wildly unpredictable sport that is so frustrating and yet so joyous at the same time. I never really used to watch MMA, thinking it too crude or brutal a sport to deserve respect.
