UFC Vancouver roared to life in front of thousands of fans, the Rogers Arena buzzing with chants and palpable excitement as fight night officially began. Although the main event between Reinier de Ridder and Brendan Allen was still on the horizon, the prelims set the tone with a women’s bantamweight clash featuring UFC newcomer Melissa Croden (7-2) from the LFA, who was taking on UFC veteran Tainara Lisboa, bringing experience from three Octagon appearances.

The hometown fighter quickly won over the crowd. Tainara Lisboa (7-4) controlled the early rounds, seemingly dictating the pace, but with a bleeding nose, ‘Scare’ shifted the momentum in the third round, unleashing a flurry of punches that knocked the Brazilian out cold. As a result, Canadian star Melissa Croden maintained her perfect finish record and celebrated an unforgettable UFC debut, while fans erupted in cheers for her stunning performance.

Melissa Croden discusses her future at UFC Vancouver

34-year-old Melissa Croden did not initially plan to enter the MMA world, setting her apart from many of her peers. Before 2015, ‘Scare’ led a life much like anyone else, working regular jobs, including a stint as a paramedic. During a three-month stay in Thailand, the “land of smiles,” she discovered Muay Thai. What began as a personal challenge to “test” herself soon ignited a passion for martial arts, and from that moment, there was no turning back.

Croden launched her fighting career through amateur bouts, impressively winning all five by knockout. At 28, she made her professional MMA debut, quickly attracting attention on the regional circuit. Now, at 34, slightly later than most fighters,  Melissa Croden has successfully stepped into the UFC spotlight at UFC Vancouver.

Following her debut, ‘Scare’ faced the media at the post-fight press conference. When a reporter asked, “We see some of these Canadian fighters—they kind of land on all the Canada cards. Is that what you’re hoping going forward, or are you hoping to travel the world with this career?”

Croden replied, “I think every Canadian in the UFC hopes they get on every Canadian card. But yeah, I’ve traveled a lot for this sport, so I’m willing to travel. My best friend, Haley Cowan, and I have traveled all throughout the States for training, and we’ve been by each other’s side. So I’ve got a travel buddy—I’ll go wherever the wind may take me.”

Fans and analysts alike are now considering Melissa Croden’s path forward, now that her successful UFC debut is behind her. Could the Canadian knockout artist carve her way to a title shot later in her career, following a trajectory similar to Alex Pereira, who achieved UFC glory despite a late start?
