

The women’s bantamweight clash between Julia Avila and Julija Storialenko has been called off from the UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs Holland card, after Storialenko fainted on the scales during her weigh-in for the event. The 27-year-old Lithuanian was subsequently rushed to the hospital.

Fans and experts of the sport were quick to show their support for the ill-fated fighter. Storialenko was looking to make a return to winning ways in her bout against Avila.
She lost a decision against the 5th ranked bantamweight Yana Kunitskaya in her last fight in August 2020. Avila is now without an opponent for tomorrow’s card.

Weight cutting-related health issues are not something new for UFC fighters. Often the competitors get so depleted, it becomes hard to even recognize them.
The scary appearances of the likes of Conor McGregor in weigh-ins during his featherweight days or even former UFC middleweight Yoel Romero haunt the fans.

Whether fighters should put themselves through such strenuous procedures just to get an edge in competition over their rivals is something that is debated hotly.
Whether it is time to revisit the rules of weight-cutting before the fight should be discussed. Otherwise, such cases will only rise by the day.

As per reports from the officials, the proposed bout in the women’s 135 lbs division of the UFC has been called off, and rightfully so. Whether the UFC reschedules the bout or gets each fighter new opponents, remains to be seen.

The Lithuanian will be heartbroken as a win against the no. 15th ranked Avila would have catapulted her to the Top-15 of the division. However, that will have to wait till she nurses herself back to health.

And considering the fact that she would have to go through yet another weight cut for her next outing inside the Octagon, it might be a long time before we see Storialenko back in action.
