After winning against Kamaru Usman at UFC 286, Leon Edwards has established himself as one of the elite welterweights. Edwards fought against Usman with all his skills and won the bout by a majority decision. Soon afterward, UFC president Dana White announced that Colby Covington would be the next welterweight title challenger. This infuriated ‘Rocky,’ as he was not at all interested in fighting Covington.

‘Chaos’ has already received two title shots against the then-welterweight king, Usman. However, he lost both bouts. Hence, many felt that Covington did not deserve to get a title shot. White completely ignored Belal Muhammad, who was at the peak of his fighting career.

‘Remember the Name’ was on an eight-fight winning streak, except for a no-contest in between. Belal and Edwards locked horns at UFC Fight Night 187. During the bout, Belal accidentally poked Edwards’ eye. This stopped Edwards’ eight-fight winning streak. Therefore, Chael Sonnen says that the welterweight star deserves a direct title shot against Edwards as he stopped ‘Rocky’s winning streak.

Chael Sonnen feels that Belal Muhammad deserves the title shot more than Colby Covington

UFC legend Chael Sonnen was talking on ‘The Schaub Show’ with the MMA artist turned YouTuber Brendan Schaub. During the conversation, both of them discussed the happenings in the UFC world. That’s when ‘The American Gangster’ cut in to speak against Dana White’s decision. He said, I got to start with this well, Belal definitely deserves it, Belal Muhammad has done enough. I think that Belal needs to play up a little bit more the fact that ‘I’m the one that stopped Leon’s win streak’.

Sonnen further added, “He doesn’t have to say beat him. He didn’t beat him but he did stop the win streak. I think that was a really good angle that he could have done by the way. Leon didn’t want Colby. He wanted to fight Belal, but Leon’s problem is he said ‘No, I’m not going to fight Colby’”

Sonnen continued, “He didn’t go after Belal and he should have said, ‘this is the guy that stopped my win streak and he started because he cheated and he poked me in the eye. I haven’t forgotten that I poke or vice versa.'” He blamed Edwards for not demanding a fight against Belal. Sonnen pointed out that it is the silence of Edwards and Belal Muhammad that led to Covington getting the title shot.

Dana White wanted ‘Chaos’ to be the next title challenger

Even after being severely criticized by the UFC world, Dana White wanted Colby Covington to be the next title challenger. White mentioned how Covington prepared himself to be a backup for the UFC 286 main event. At the moment, he confirmed that ‘Chaos’ will be the next title challenger. ‘Remember the Name,’ who got to fight against Gilbert Burns at UFC 288 won the bout via a unanimous decision. It is expected that Muhammad will get to fight the winner between Covington and Edwards.
