Conor McGregor has always been regarded as one of the biggest MMA stars of all time. His fights have garnered him a ton of appreciation from the fans. However, what about his performance as a coach or mentor? Recently, McGregor returned to lead his team in TUF season 31 against Michael Chandler. Despite losing quite badly and narrowly escaping the clean sweep mark, one of his team members heaped praise on him for his way of handling things and managing teams.

Brad Katona, who switched sides from Team Chandler to Team McGregor after the quarterfinal bout, stated in a recent interview that Conor McGregor’s style of handling and managing things as a coach maybe superior to Chandler’s. He highlighted the way McGregor took money out of his own pockets to provide the best for the team, from coaches to chefs, and so on. Katona ranked McGregor higher than Chandler as a coach.

Brad Katona ranks Conor McGregor ahead of Michael Chandler

During a conversation with Ross Cadwell on his YouTube channel, “The Energized Show,” Brad Katona was asked about his preferences as a coach. Having trained under three TUF coaches, namely Daniel Cormier, Michael Chandler, and Conor McGregor, he was asked to rank them. Katona promptly ranked McGregor as his top choice, followed by Cormier in second place, and Chandler in third place. He stated, “ I know we know exactly the answer. It would be Conor, DC, and Chandler “

Further contemplating on the matter, Katona shed light on why he chose McGregor as rank one. He said “The team that Conor brought, I can only assume it’s out of his pocket. And now we can say yeah he has so much money and all that. That doesn’t change what he did. He brought in, I believe, the best coaches in the world. You know, John [Kavanagh], Owen [Roddy], Sergei [Pikulskiy]. He brought in Tristan Kennedy, the nutritionist, he brought in the FAST doc, in the FAST crew. He brought in a massage sports therapist for his team, he brought in a chef for the refuel meals. And you have Conor also taking some practice. Like, how is that not elite “

During the conversation, Katona emphasized the fact that McGregor spared no effort in building his team to be the best out there. He invested a substantial amount of money in hiring additional coaches, therapists, nutritionists, and even a chef. All of these expenses were covered by McGregor himself, thereby solidifying his position as the elite coach on TUF.

Team McGregor’s rollercoaster journey to bantamweight victory

Team McGregor had quite the heart-pounding experience on The Ultimate Fighter 31. Despite undergoing some initial setbacks, they ultimately performed a notable victory in the bantamweight event. Their journey began with a chain of disappointments as their first seven fighters were harshly defeated by team Chandler in the quarterfinal matches, leading to a potential clean sweep. However, Rico Disciullo emerged as a beacon of hope for Team McGregor by way of securing a victory in their quarterfinal bouts, putting a stop to the feared sweep.

In the semi-final rounds, Katona swithcedf allegiances and displayed his prowess by vanquishing former teammate Timur Valiev in the semifinal bout, securing a coveted position in the championship round. Regrettably, DiSciullo was unable to replicate his earlier success and succumbed to Cody Gibson in the semifinal encounter.

Nevertheless, Katona’s exceptional performance during the finals, where he outperformed Gibson to seize the bantamweight tournament, served as a redemptive triumph for Team McGregor in an otherwise lackluster season. While the overall team performance may have left much to be desired, Katona’s victory emerged as a guiding light, offering a glimmer of optimism for Team McGregor’s future prospects.
