The lightweight division in the UFC has always been stacked. Some of the most incredible fights and rivalries have taken place in the lightweight division. Since the arrival of Michael Chandler, the division seems to be even better. While Chandler has locked horns with a fair share of fighters, one rivalry that seems to bloom is between him and Dustin Poirier. Today, we look into the origins of this rivalry.

On an episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast, Poirier was asked if he thinks it made sense for Chandler to fight for the title so early. Poirier replied, saying, “I am not in a position to call it. But, I just feel like he needs to cut. You know I respect the guy, and he is a great fighter, but he just needs to cut his teeth in the UFC a little bit more, a little bit longer.”
He further said, “If he goes and beats Oliveira, and me and Conor fight, then it makes sense. You beat two guys in the top five, top ten. One guy is a fight away from a title shot. I think that makes sense.”

“But, you are coming in and right now where he is at and beating a guy who’s coming off of a loss. I didn’t finish him, But I beat him. So you beat a guy who’s coming off of a loss and then you are going to jump into a title fight. I just think there is higher ranked guys, coming off of wins that put you in that position.”

This moment seems to be what originally gave fuel to the fire. Now that the rivalry has started between the two fighters, they seem to keep taking shots at each other.
Michael Chandler responds to claims by Dustin Poirier
The rivalry between two fighters makes a fight interesting, and it also helps to sell Pay-per-views. A potential fight between Chandler and Poirier might do exactly the same.

In a recent interview with Teddy Atlas, Poirier said he was a dangerous fight for Michael Chandler. Chandler called out Conor McGregor too, but Poirier believed guys like himself and Conor punch very hard.
Poirier said that if guys like Ferguson and Oliveira can hurt Chandler, then if guys like himself and Conor touch his chin, things will be bad for ‘Iron Mike.’ Poirier believes Chandler gets hurt in fights simply because it is not possible to have an offense and a defense, and Chandler is all about offense.
