UFC CEO Dana White recently announced that the interim heavyweight title will be on the line at UFC 295. Tom Aspinall will fight Sergei Pavlovich for the belt after Jon Jones pulled out of the Stipe Miocic fight due to injury. However, UFC legend Chael Sonnen has speculated that the interim title fight could be an attempt to push Miocic out of the title picture.

Jon Jones recently suffered a shoulder injury and tore his pectoral muscle just weeks before UFC 295. This left Dana White Dana White in a tough position. Thereafter, he announced a fight between surging contenders, Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall, leaving Stipe Miocic behind. Let’s see what Chael Sonnen had to say about that.

After Dana White announced the interim title fight at UFC 295, former double champion Henry Cejudo had some things to say about it. He believed that the interim title was just for show and it was actually a number one contender’s fight for Jon Jones’ title. Meanwhile, Chael Sonnen found Cejudo’s idea of the interim title fight an interesting one. He voiced, “When Henry talked about it should be a number one contender’s match, I thought that was a very interesting concept.”

Chael Sonnen also believes that Henry Cejudo unintentionally mentioned a ploy. ‘The American Gangster’ speculated that Cejudo wanted the interim title fight to result in Stipe Miocic getting removed from the title picture. “What he’s saying, and I believe unintentionally, is push Stipe out of the way. That’s what he would be saying,” Sonnen further added. However, he does not believe that Miocic deserves to be treated like that. Sonnen even explained why he thinks like that.

Chael Sonnen stated that the UFC should not punish Stipe Miocic for their UFC 295 fight getting canceled. Moreover, it was not his fault, rather, Jon Jones accidentally injured himself weeks before the fight. He said, “The biggest problem with that is Stipe didn’t do anything wrong. If anybody changed the deal, it is Jon [Jones for getting injured]. Stipe did not change it.”

Sonnen further stated that Stipe Miocic was doing everything he needed to compete against Jon Jones. He was in shape; he was training, and it also looked like his weight was in check ahead of UFC 295. As such, the UFC should keep this in consideration. “Stipe cannot in this scenario be punished… because he did not do anything other than what he was supposed to do,” the UFC legend added.

There is still no word on what’s next for Stipe Miocic while Jon Jones makes his recovery. Even Tom Aspinall recently claimed that the former 2-time champion only wants the fight against ‘Bones’, and has no other opponents on his radar. It remains to be seen how Dana White will navigate this situation after wrapping up with UFC 295.
