A vegan diet is not the diet that comes to mind when thinking about UFC fighters. However, following a plant-based diet is not that uncommon for MMA fighters. Many, including Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, and Karolina Kowaliewicz, are some examples of fighters who follow veganism. But is Dustin Poirier also vegan?

Along with training, diet is of prime importance for any athlete. With several fighters following a vegan diet, there must be some really great benefits.

The Diaz brothers are famously known for their vegan diet. In fact, Nate Diaz has avoided meat and dairy products since he was 18-years-old. While Nick Diaz started veganism because meat and dairy didn’t sit right with his body and because of the health benefits.

With such acclaimed fighters vouching for the diet, MMA fans might be curious to know which other fighter follows a similar diet; especially Dustin Poirier because there have been many speculations about his diet.

Is Dustin Poirier vegan?
Back at UFC 242, Poirier faced Khabib Nurmagomedov in the octagon. Unfortunately, he lost the fight through submission. However, he had a hip injury that had been bothering him, and hence, he had to go under surgery. While recovering from the surgery, Poirier followed a plant-based vegan diet.
He had said, “I’ve actually been eating a plant-based diet to heal up. My body’s feeling great. I’m lighter than I usually am in camp right now. Everything’s going good. I’m staying positive and March or April we’ll be beating somebody up. I just want it to be the right name and I want it to make sense.”

Being true to this word, he went on to defeat Dan Hooker. Later, he also managed to beat his rival Conor McGregor twice in the octagon. A clean vegan diet might have helped him in recovering well because of which he was able to give great back-to-back performances.

His vegan diet was to help him recover. However, he does not follow it currently.

What does Dustin Poirier eat?
While he is not vegan, he does prefer a clean diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. And consumes meat as little as possible.
Poirier is a foodie and also has his own brand of hot sauce.

In a video that is almost a decade old, Poirier had explained that he was a food junkie and likes to gorge on food after his fights. In fact, he used to keep a drawer full of treats for himself. This surely shows how much he loves food.
Further, his love for food perhaps also led him to take on great humanitarian acts. His charity foundation ‘The Good Fight Foundation’ had donated 1000 meals to hospital workers. He hopes to engage in such charity activities on a larger scale in the future as well.

Poirier will soon face Charles Oliveira at UFC 269. The event will happen on December 11 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Poirier and Oliveira will grapple for the title. It would be exciting for fans to see if Poirier will be able to snatch the title away from the Brazilian fighter.
