The middleweight division just caught fire again, and this time, it’s a wildfire you can’t outrun. It’s not every day a fight announcement sends the MMA world into overdrive, but when Dana White drops the hammer, you better believe people stop what they’re doing. This time, Dana White leaned into the mic and dropped the words we were all craving, “That fight’s done.”
Yes, folks, Dricus du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev is happening. And while the date and venue may still float in limbo, one thing is set in stone—the war for the middleweight throne is about to get primal. Before anything, the South African fighter wants our attention. He’s made a declaration that the Chechen wolf must pay attention to.
The reigning UFC middleweight champion took to Instagram earlier today, and while it was just a photo of him mid-prep, it was the caption that stopped fans in their scroll. “I’ve never wanted to be one of the best, I’ve always wanted to be the greatest.”

After weeks of speculation and silence, the South African champion finally broke cover. Injuries and rumors of ducking the wolf are all wrong. Du Plessis stood tall with the conviction of a man and addressed the injury rumors on his Instagram post. A portion of his caption reads, “Okay so everyone had their opinions and rumors and stories about a shin break and injuries etc. I found it all very entertaining, unfortunately none of it is true…”
Meanwhile, Chimaev’s rise continues like a freight train barreling through whatever’s in its way. Fourteen fights. Fourteen wins. He folded Robert Whittaker like laundry with a nasty face crank that still haunts highlight reels. But du Plessis has seen Whittaker too. And Israel Adesanya. And Sean Strickland twice. He put all of them down.

The truth is, nobody really knows what Chimaev looks like after 20 minutes of hell. He’s never danced in the championship rounds. Du Plessis has. And yet, there’s danger in counting out a man like Khamzat Chimaev. This is a guy who took down the iron-willed Kamaru Usman, brutalized top contenders, and still hasn’t tasted defeat.
What’s your perspective on:
Can Dricus du Plessis dethrone the unstoppable Khamzat Chimaev, or will the Chechen wolf reign supreme?

UFC 319 looms as the battleground for Dricus du Plessis to prove he’s GOAT
Dana White’s announcement pulled the curtain back just enough for fans to salivate. “We all know that fight’s happening. The du Plessis vs. Khamzat fight, it’s happening. It’s just not happening in International Fight Week… That fight’s done,” White clarified at the UFC Kansas City post-fight press conference.
While UFC 317 is off the table, UFC 319 in August now looms large. It’s a card that could define the landscape of 2025 and beyond. With Poirier vs. Holloway 3 lined up for UFC 318, the middleweight showdown might just steal the thunder come late summer.
And don’t sleep on this stat: somebody’s 0 has got to go. Dricus Du Plessis is 9-0 in the UFC, riding an 11-fight win streak. His 2 losses in his pro MMA career are outside the UFC. Chimaev, 14-0 overall, has the chance to tie Dricus’ UFC record with one more win.
Chimaev’s approach has consistently been straightforward. First, he applies pressure; then, he punishes his opponent. Finally, he aims to finish the fight decisively. However, when facing an opponent like du Plessis, who has meticulously tailored his training to focus on precise breathing techniques and counterattacks, that strategy may ultimately encounter significant challenges.
It’s worth remembering: the last time du Plessis faced a heavy wrestler, he was still breathing through a busted septum. Derek Brunson had him in deep waters early, until du Plessis detonated a right hand that sent Brunson to the mat like a bag of rocks. And now, with his breathing fixed, the champ wants to prove that he’s the true undisputed champ.

The Pretoria-based fighter has been vocal about his bigger dream, to be considered the GOAT. In that interview with ESPN in February 2025, du Plessis stated, “Fighting for your first UFC world title – my whole life since the age of 16 has been about that moment, winning that belt. Once you achieve something like that, the big question comes: ‘OK. Have I achieved what I want to achieve or is there more?'”
There’s a hunger in his voice. The kind that makes you sit up straighter and listen. He further elaborated on his mindset:, “[I always told myself]: ‘I need to win this next fight, because this is the fight that is going to get me the next one. This is the fight that’s leading to the ultimate goal of being the greatest, so regardless of what’s on the line, the fight needs to be won.'”
