Having done a huge amount of charity work in his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, Poirier is known for being a nice guy among MMA fighters as well.

Case in point, he recently met Sam Alvey at the Atlanta airport and had some kind words for him after Alvey lost his fight.

Alvey uploaded a tweet on Twitter detailing his experience. “Walking through Atlanta airport right now, minding my own and the amazing Dustin Poirier appeared out of nowhere and told me congratulations on my fighting to “keep my head up. It was a good one”. What a cool thing to have happens. I was a fan, but now… that’s just unreal,” he said.

Additionally, it’s not like Alvey is new to the business. A veteran of the sport, this was Alvey’s 50th match in his professional fighting career. Poirier’s act surely made his day.

He was fighting Julian Marquez, and the fight wasn’t really going his way. Marquez is known for his finishing prowess and Alvey had decided to engage with him. Every punch was a haymaker. Marquez almost knocked Alvey out with one of those punches.

However, the fight didn’t last very long and two minutes into the 2nd round, Marquez choked to earn a win by way of submission.
