Conor McGregor recently took to Twitter to reveal his game plan for the possible trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier. ‘The Diamond’ knocked out McGregor in an emphatic fashion at UFC 257, handing the Irishman the first T/KO loss of his MMA career. The key to the Louisiana native’s triumph was his crushing calf kicks.

‘The Notorious’ recently revealed that he will be looking to check those leg kicks next time around. Subsequently, Poirier replied he won’t use leg kicks next time, rather he would go for headbutts. Hence, it seems like the gamesmanship between the two top lightweights has already begun ahead of a possible trilogy fight.

The lack of trash talking from McGregor was a notable miss in the build-up to their second fight. In their first meeting, the Irishman went all guns blazing ahead of UFC 178. The maturity of being a father and achieving everything in the sport was touted as the reasons for the calmness from ‘The Notorious’ in 2021. Furthermore, many believed he didn’t possess the same hunger anymore.

Those beliefs can be true to some extent, but it would be nonsensical to dismiss the skills that McGregor still possesses.

That only shows how much improvement ‘The Diamond’ has made since their first fight in 2014. He has made drastic changes in his game and is currently one of the best fighters in the world. His win over the former two-division UFC champion is a testament to the same.

Is Dustin Poirier the uncrowned lightweight champion?

The Diamond‘ moved up to the 155lbs division of the UFC from featherweight after his loss to ‘The Notorious’ in 2014. He has since been beaten only twice in his 14 bouts. Michael Johnson and Khabib Nurmagomedov have been the only men to stop Poirier inside the Octagon since his move up.

Poirier holds wins over the likes of Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Dan Hooker, Max Holloway, Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor, and more. With the champion Nurmagomedov seemingly retired, one can claim Poirier is the best lightweight on planet earth. He was tipped to fight for the belt after his UFC 257 win.

But a trilogy bout against McGregor looks almost certain to be his next fight. It makes sense considering the score is tied at 1-1 between them.
