Dustin Poirier recently picked up his second win against Conor McGregor at UFC 264. Undoubtedly, the number one contender, Poirier, is up for a title shot against reigning lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. However, a recent back and forth on Twitter between Nate Diaz and ‘The Diamond’ has sparked rumors of a possible matchup between the two.
In fact, this isn’t the first time Nate and Poirier have crossed paths. Back in 2018, both agreed to a showdown scheduled for UFC 230. However, a hip injury that required surgery forced Dustin Poirier to withdraw from the highly anticipated matchup. Both fighters have been on their respective journeys ever since, only to come full circle almost three years later.

The back and forth began in July with Diaz trying to antagonize Dustin Poirier by sharing a video of him during recovery from his hip injury, later challenging him to a fight. ‘The Diamond’ immediately responded, claiming he could take on the younger Diaz at any weight class. Now, things seem to be picking up.
What’s more, Nate Diaz fired back within a few hours, taking another dig at Poirier for withdrawing from their previously scheduled fight.

Inarguably an entertaining match-up, a fight between Poirier and Diaz will grab a lot of eyeballs, making for another big payday for both the fighters. Also, since the UFC has shown an interest in the matchup before, one can imagine the fight won’t be a tough one to make.
Will Dustin Poirier become the lightweight champion?
A former interim champion, Dustin Poirier, has been grinding away in hopes of having that undisputed championship belt wrapped around his waist. His recent performances against Conor McGregor have guaranteed him a title shot. In fact, Poirier passed on an opportunity to fight for the belt after his first win against ‘The Notorious’. He opted to fight McGregor for the third time for the obvious financial benefits.

But with back and forth between Diaz and Dustin catching steam, one can imagine Dustin putting off his title shot for a later date. Although taking a risk against McGregor paid off both times, a loss against the bigger Nate Diaz could undo all the work he has put in to reach this position.

It would seem like fighting for the belt would make more sense for Dustin just because of the risk involved in fighting Diaz. Nevertheless, one can expect Poirier to make the calculated decision for his future.
