Mark Zuckerberg is one of the nicest, most harmless-looking people you will come across. Combined with his fame and the controversies his companies find themselves in, this makes him an easy target for trolls. But looks can be deceiving, and chances are, the Meta CEO could put most of his detractors to sleep.

The Californian has been training in BJJ since 2020 and even won a recent tournament. And Zuckerberg’s instructor and PFL fighter Khai Wu joined ES’s Noah Lack on our exclusive ES Fancast, where, among other things, Wu spoke about Mark Zuckerberg, the martial artist, and what he is like as a student.

In the exclusive ES Fancast interview, Wu told Lack his philosophy on martial arts training. The PFL fighter said that one cannot progress in martial arts training unless one goes through the rigor and discipline of martial arts. He revealed that Mark Zuckerberg fit right in and that he was just another guy when training BJJ, and didn’t really stand out.

“Yeah, yeah, I think you can’t get good at martial arts if you’re not training as a martial artist. You can’t get special treatment here and there. Yeah, it’s very simple. But if you didn’t know who he was and you trained with him on the mats, you wouldn’t know anything.”

The BJJ purple belt also commented on the Meta CEO’s physical abilities. Wu told Walsh that he found Zuckerberg to be really strong and athletic. “Like, you wouldn’t notice any difference other than he’s really strong, really athletic. He’s just like another student of the game on the mats, you know,” said Wu.

Mark Zuckerberg wins gold at California BJJ tournament

Mark Zuckerberg is taking his martial arts very seriously, as Wu revealed in his exclusive FanCast with ES. He won his blue belt in BJJ in July and has already won a tournament. In May this year, Zuckerberg competed in the BJJ Tour competition in Woodside, California, his first BJJ competition. He competed in both the GI and no-GI categories in the white belt master featherweight division. The Facebook founder was able to win gold in the no-GI division and silver in the GI division.

Early this year, Zuckerberg was jokingly challenged to a fight by X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The Meta CEO accepted the challenge the next day for what UFC boss Dana White said would have been the biggest fight in the history of the world. However, the Harvard alum later ‘moved on’ from the fight after accusing the South African of not taking the challenge seriously.

Hi, I am Kanishk and I am a UFC Writer at EssentiallySports. I love telling the stories of these magnificent fighters and this wildly unpredictable sport that is so frustrating and yet so joyous at the same time. I never really used to watch MMA, thinking it too crude or brutal a sport to deserve respect.
