Last week, Chael Sonnen’s revolutionary statement about the upcoming UFC 307 headline fight between Alex Pereira and Khalil Rountree Jr., “Let me give you the hot take of the day: Khalil Rountree is going to walk through Pereira” sparked a buzz in the MMA community. This bold prediction led many to question Rountree Jr.’s underdog status as the #8-ranked light heavyweight contender was compared to division king ‘Poatan’, who is currently in his prime. Despite Sonnen’s confidence, the American native doesn’t seem fazed by the remark, as he addressed it in a recent interview,

Any fighter would be happy to hear support from a UFC legend like Chael Sonnen. However, Khalil Rountree Jr. is built differently. For him, it doesn’t matter who supports him as he’s entirely focused on his goal of dethroning Alex Pereira. In a recent interview with Michael Bisping, ‘The War Horse’ echoed this sentiment when asked about Sonnen’s supportive comments.

Rountree Jr. claimed that he was unaware of the remark, saying, “I do appreciate that he has such high belief in me. It’s nice to know, especially coming from a person like Chael. But for me, man this is really a time I am just taking to really zero in on my own skills and not feed into the hype or hate. Like I said, anybody who supports me, I’m 100% grateful and thankful for the belief and support.”

Khalil Rountree Jr. recently found himself in the spotlight of criticism from opponents like Jamahal Hill and Magomed Ankalaev, who took issue with his withdrawal from UFC 303 due to unintentionally ingesting a banned substance, leading to a suspension by various athletic anti-doping authorities. The situation cast a shadow over his upcoming fight against ‘Poatan’, causing fans to worry about whether the fight would happen.

Rountree Jr.’s path to the title shot has been cleared by the NSAC

As soon as Khalil Rountree Jr. realized that he had ingested a banned substance, which was mixed into his supplement, he informed the UFC first and because of his self-reported nature, the American native initially received a two-month suspension from USADA. However, the Nevada Athletic Commission was not satisfied with this punishment and extended his suspension to an undisclosed term, leading fans to question how the fight at UFC 307 against Alex Pereira, slated for October 5, could happen.

Well, worry no more. John Morgan shared great news for MMA fans, stating that Rountree Jr.’s suspension would end before UFC 307. In his recent X post, Morgan wrote, “Khalil Rountree Jr. is now clear for his #UFC307 title fight after receiving a four-and-a-half-month suspension that terminates on Sept. 18 and prosecution fees of $157 after previously self-reporting accidental ingestion of a banned substance.”
