Although he seemingly confirmed the dates for the title fight, what left listeners speculating was the date he mentioned.

Both athletes have been going back and forth since rumors of the fight started circulating. Cejudo particularly has been active on Twitter, calling out his fellow bantamweights with hilarious tweets. What has been frustrating for fans and the other bantamweights is the delay in getting a date fixed for the title bout. Even number one-ranked bantamweight Sean O’Malley had recently shared his views on the fight.

After months without any update, Henry Cejudo finally provided an update on the next 135 lbs title fight, during the LFA 149 broadcast. The former double champ announced: “Aljizzlame is next. The only problem is he keeps ducking Triple C! He doesn’t want the smoke. Saying Sterling is “dodging” him, the Olympic gold medalist added, ” He’s fat. He looks like Whoopie Goldberg! He absolutely makes me sick.”

When asked about any probable date, Cejudo revealed “The UFC is shooting for March 5”.

This was interesting to note as March 5 falls on a Sunday and UFC events are held on Saturday nights. Even Coach Eric Nicksick pointed it out. Was this just a miss from Cejudo? Or is he just trying to put pressure on the champion by putting out these dates?

The 35-year-old has not competed since his bout against Dominick Cruz in May 2020 after which he announced his retirement. Cejudo will eventually head into a completely new landscape from the one he left two and half years back. While talking about the division he stated that there were a bunch of exciting fights to be made. Acknowledging how stacked the division was currently, he stated. “Contenders like Sean O’Malley to me, the double champ, coming back to Aljamain Sterling (and) what he’s done so far. From T.J. (Dillashaw) and the whole deal to (Cory) Sandhagen still knocking on the door, the division is stacked from top to bottom.”

How substantial is Cejudo’s claim about the fight taking place in March? Although March 5th does fall on a Sunday, talks regarding the fight surely must have advanced from both sides. Most likely the fight is expected to be booked around the same date but ultimately fans can only wait for an official announcement.
