Tony Ferguson took to social media and sent out positive energy to his fans as the New Year moves on. The UFC lightweight contender is always in the swing of things, and fans can’t help but follow along. ‘El Cucuy’ oftentimes has a unique way of communicating with fans, and it’s good to see him take a straightforward approach for a change.
The former interim champion has also been in the news as of late for several reasons. Chiefly, his inclusion as a major player at lightweight constantly helps to keep him relevant in the eyes of fans. What’s more, he’s become somewhat of a ‘People’s champion’ since he never ended up fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov.
His fan-favorite status aside, Ferguson has struggled to make massive moves in terms of his viability as a title threat. He’s had a rather off-key 2020 as he suffered two straight losses, in dominant fashion no less. Moreover, he went from being an interim title player to being bumped at the back of the line for contention.
Ferguson was on a 12-fight win streak heading into 2020, however, he ran right into Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. He was finished in the final round, on his feet no less, and ended up needing several months off. Additionally, his campaign didn’t get any better as he suffered a brutalization at the hands of Charles Oliveira.
The fight against ‘Do Bronx’ wasn’t even close as Tony just couldn’t seem to get any rhythm going. Not to mention, he almost had his arm cleanly snapped off right off via a vicious armbar. It’s safe to say that Tony Ferguson will have some work to do come his first fight of 2021.
His next fight is sure to be defined in terms of determining his place amongst the elite 155-pounders in the division. Another brutal loss against a top contender may set him back to a place of no return in terms of contention. UFC 257 on January 23, 2021, will provide a lot of clarity in terms of the direction that needs to be followed for Tony to make a comeback.
