Rising star Sean O’Malley is arguably one of the biggest prospects in the UFC right now. The bantamweight fighter made his promotional debut in 2017 and went on a 4-0 run before tasting defeat for the first time in his career. He lost to Marlon Vera at UFC 252 after he suffered a foot injury during the fight, which majorly affected his movement.
However, O’Malley bounced back and is on a three-fight win streak. After his last win against Raulian Paiva at UFC 269, ‘Suga’ was put on the sidelines because of a thumb injury.

During his show on YouTube, he talked about his injury and his future plans. O’Malley said, “If I don’t (fight) till June or July, it just gives me time to get better and improve. I haven’t been able to train since my fight. I’ve had a fractured thumb since my fight–I haven’t been able to train. I haven’t been able to improve until now. I get my cast off soon. That’ll give me a couple of months to improve. I’m not too worried about it.”

“Ideally, I get three fights in a year. That’s kind of where my head’s at. I don’t know if it’s (because I want) more money, I think it’s competition. I love competing. But I just want to get back in the game and improve. So if I only get two–if I get one in July and November, December… I might only get two this year, fight out the contract, then boom: 2023 fat f**king contract and go on a killing spree,” he added.
Sean O’Malley believes that a rematch with Marlon Vera is going to happen
‘Suga’ has lost just once in his professional MMA career. And that defeat came at the hands of Marlon Vera. However, O’Malley doesn’t consider that a loss as a foot injury hampered his movement. Since then, O’Malley has only raised his stock and hasn’t ruled out a future fight against ‘Chito.’

In an interview with Michael Bisping, when asked about a potential rematch, the twelfth ranked UFC bantamweight said, “Oh, 100 percent. That rematch is gonna happen one hundred percent. I know ‘Chito’ thinks he won… I mean, he won the fight fair and square, but I also know at that level that’s just not how you wanna end the fight.”

Vera is ranked number 8 in the bantamweight division and is on a two-fight win streak. Hence, given the rankings, it is definitely on the cards. If a contest between the two goes ahead, it can have huge implications for both fighters.
