Jake Paul has done many things never before seen in the sport of boxing. He has managed to sell more PPVs and make more money than even many boxing champions while fighting other celebrities and retired MMA fighters. While he has faced criticism for allegedly handpicking his opponents, these criticisms seem almost irrefutable given his choice of his next opponent, Mike Tyson, who would be 58 years old, three decades Paul’s senior, by the time they fight at the AT&T Arena on July 20, 2024.

This, of course, has rubbed almost everybody (including his own brother Logan Paul) in the fight community the wrong way. ANd among the people not happy with the move is former UFC fighter and bareknuckle boxing star Mike Perry.

BKFC King of Violence champion Mike Perry is a big fan of Mike Tyson. ‘Platinum’ sat down with TMZ Sports for an interview ahead of his upcoming bareknuckle bout against Thiago Alves on April 27, 2024. On being asked who his dream bareknuckle opponent would be, the 32-year-old said Jake Paul. Perry was especially concerned about his next fight against ‘Iron Mike’, who is expected to be easy work for the former Disney star due to his advanced age and bevy of health issues, and warned ‘The Problem Child.

“Jake Paul, man… If he hurts Mike Tyson, bro, let me get that, bro,” Perry told TMZ Sports. While Tyson is not being given much of a chance and has been warned of potentially getting severe and permanent brain damage, some feel that Tyson’s power and world championship-level experience may be enough to deal with the social media star.

Many think that the bout is a lose-lose prospect for Paul since a loss against the near senior-citizen would make him an object of ridicule and make sure no one takes his boxing career seriously. A win, on the other hand, will not do much for his reputation since he is expected to win the fight anyway.

It seems, however, that despite his promises of wanting to contend for a title in the future, he is prioritizing money over being taken seriously in the boxing community. Which is apparent, since his own brother trashed the fight.

Logan Paul criticizes, Tyson Fury defends Tyson-Paul

Earlier on his ‘Impaulsive Podcast’, Jake Paul’s WWE star brother Logan Paul had dismissed the bout, calling Mike Tyson “old” and “senile” and echoed fan sentiment, saying that the former heavyweight champion does not stand a chance. However, not everyone is as negative about the fight.

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, named after Mike Tyson and a huge fan of the New York native, gave his vote of confidence to the fight and felt that it was a “pretty even match”. ‘The Gypsy King’ said that the fight was ultimately good for boxing and would bring many new viewers to the sport.

Clearly, Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is not a riveting matchup. While Paul, thirty years younger and in his athletic prime is expected to beat Tyson, he should be careful not to hurt him. If he knocks out Tyson, the most well-loved figure in all of combat sports, he will become public enemy number one in the boxing world.
