They say, “age is just a number.” But in the brutal world of MMA, it’s much more than that—it’s a battle in its own right. As time marches on, even the most resilient fighters begin to feel the wear. For some, the fire fades early; for others, it lingers a little longer. Still, one truth remains: no one escapes the grip of age. Sooner or later, it catches up. Few understand this better than UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns. Once considered one of the most feared men in his division, the 38-year-old now finds himself navigating a tough stretch in his career.
But one moment earlier this year stung in a different way. In January, Gilbert Burns made an appearance on lightweight contender Renato Moicano’s podcast, Show Me The Money. The episode had its share of laughs until the topic of age came up. ‘Durinho’ pointed out that many people mistakenly think he’s 34 rather than 38. That’s when Moicano fired back with a savage jab: “Who? A fucking blind man?” At the time, the comment came and went. But the internet never forgets.
Fast forward to now—Gilbert Burns recently sat down for an interview on Home of Fight. During a sidewalk chat, the host revisited Moicano’s cutting remark. The welterweight contender took it in stride, laughing as he revealed that even he once got his age wrong before stepping in against Sean Brady. “I even thought I was 40 before that fight,” he joked. Burns went on to credit his intense regimen—“training, sprints, and grappling”—for making him feel younger again, all while confidently showing off his abs.

Still, not everyone was buying it. UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, now more active on social media than inside the Octagon, couldn’t resist chiming in with his own reality check. Commenting on the clip, ‘Bones’ wrote: “My boy looks exactly the same.” It’s surprising to realize Jones is already 37. Though still one of the sport’s biggest stars, he doesn’t seem to be in the same shape as someone like Gilbert Burns.

When it comes to activity, ‘Durinho’ clearly has the edge—Jon Jones has fought just twice in the last two years, while Burns has stepped into the cage four times from April 2023. With Gilbert Burns set to make his return this week at UFC Vegas 106, the difference is striking.
Meanwhile, Jon Jones remains sidelined, and with Tom Aspinall holding the interim title, the road to becoming the undisputed champion feels farther away than ever. The big question now: will the much-anticipated showdown finally come to fruition?

What’s the latest update on Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall?
This month, Tom Aspinall broke the long-standing interim heavyweight title record previously held by former bantamweight champion Renan Barão, who held the belt for 534 days. Although Aspinall shattered Barão’s 11-year-old record, he remains somewhat unsatisfied, having already defended his title last year against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in his hometown of Manchester. Rumors now swirl about a possible second title defense against Ciryl Gane, but neither Dana White nor the UFC has confirmed anything yet.
Earlier this year, Dana White confidently stated that the much-anticipated Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight is “100%” happening. However, ‘Bones’ has made it clear he expects a hefty payday, demanding what he called “f— you money” to face Aspinall. As we hit the midpoint of 2025, there’s still no official word on the fight, leaving Tom Aspinall and fans growing increasingly impatient.

After UFC 315, Dana White went live on Instagram to share details about upcoming PPV events. When asked about the Jones vs. Aspinall matchup during the live chat, Dana reassured everyone, saying, “I’ve told you before, we’ll get Aspinall vs. Jones done. The heavyweight fight is happening. Just stay patient—I’ll be announcing it soon.”
What do you think lies ahead for Jon Jones? With his 38th birthday coming up this July, do you believe he’ll accept the challenge against interim champ Tom Aspinall and put his legacy on the line? Share your thoughts below.
