Gilbert Burns is raring to go up against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299. The fighter has stacked up an impressive resume but has six losses, all of which were within the UFC. However, that doesn’t mean one can count ‘Durinho’ out of the fight just yet.

It’s all in the name of Burns. His nickname, that is. Burns is known for his grappling and powering through some of the toughest blows and takedown attempts. Perhaps, his moniker ‘Durinho’ is well deserved. So what does it mean then? Here’s all about it.

Gilbert Burns comes from an MMA family background. Both of his brothers, Herbert and Frederick, began training with Gilbert Burns early on at the Nova Uniao HQ based in Rio de Janeiro. One of their teammates at the gym, Vítor Ribeiro, came up with the nickname ‘Todo-Duro’.

The nickname was intended for Burns’ older brother and translated to ‘Hardman’. It would appear that toughness was a Burns family trait. Of course, everyone considered Gilbert Burns a smaller version of his brother, and so he was named ‘Durinho’.

The name simply translates to ‘Tiny Tough Guy’. That’s pretty much how he attained his name. Through legendary toughness in the gym, Burns became a grappler of the highest skill set and eventually, as fate would have it, translated his skill to MMA.

He has participated in and won many grappling fights in his career and also collected MMA wins against the likes of Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal in the welterweight division. Now, his next fight is none other than Maddalena.

What comes next for Burns?

Gilbert Burns will be going up against an opponent with only 2 losses in his career so far. Many are expecting him to outperform Maddalena. However, will that be the case? Most of Burns’ MMA losses have come via a unanimous decision.

This clearly makes it an issue if the fight goes the distance. Burns is a brilliant grappler and could put Maddalena in a choke to earn a finish victory. If he does, perhaps, he could look forward to fighting Kamaru Usman once again to earn a shot at the welterweight title.

But Usman may just fight at middleweight after his last bout. So Burns may also get to go up against UFC newcomer Michael ‘Venom’ Page in a high-profile fight or another top-5 ranked contender instead for a shot at Leon Edwards. Do you think this is possible?
