Ever since his win against ‘Wonderboy’, Burns has been looking for an opponent. He recently in an interview said that he would like to fight Jorge Masvidal next. But this was before his fight against Leon Edwards was announced.

Dana White, in an interview, was asked about Dan Hooker fighting an unranked fighter in his previous fight, despite being in the top 10. In response, the UFC president said, “Sometimes that happens, you know. Guys that are ranked in the top 10 or 15, you know sometimes everybody’s booked. I mean, we have that situation right now. Gilbert Burns, who’s the number two welterweight in the world, wants to fight, but all the guys that make sense for him to fight are booked.”

The UFC welterweight division is stacked, but all the fighters in the top 5 of the division are booked. Burns, in order to fight, will have to either fight someone significantly lower ranked than him, or switch his division.

Gilbert Burns is looking for a fight

Gilbert Burns wants to fight one more time this year. The only problem is that all the fights that make sense for him cannot happen, as the other fighters are booked. UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is defending his title against the number #1 ranked Colby Covington at UFC 268 on November 6, 2021. Burns has shown his desire to take on Jorge Masvidal, but the promotion booked him for UFC 269. He is going to fight his long-time rival and number #3 ranked Leon Edwards.

The only fighter in the top 5 who is without a fight is the longtime friend and teammate of Burns, Vicente Luque. Both men have made it clear in the past that they will never fight each other. And Luque recently called out Nate Diaz for a fight.

‘Durinho’ in order to get an opponent is also willing to jump up a weight category and fight the number #7 ranked middleweight, Sean Strickland. Strickland vs. Luke Rockhold was booked for UFC 268, but because of a herniated disc, the latter had to pull out of the fight. Burns on his Twitter said that he was ready to step in on short notice.

He said, “Middle weight nov 06? Sign me in I fight Strickland and I meant it.”

There are also talks about him fighting Neil Magny, but nothing has materialized on that end as well.
