‘Games? You had a shell of the Funk and you still couldn’t get the job done. Gonna cut the oxygen to your brain and put you to sleep, f**k boy!’
The first fight between the two saw Petr Yan dictate all the action right from the start. The Russian’s relentless pressure and powerful strikes kept Sterling at bay, making it extremely tough for him to force Yan to engage in any grappling exchanges.
In fact, it was Petr Yan who was surprisingly successful at taking down Sterling more than once during their fight. However, soon after becoming the champion because of a disqualification, Aljamain Sterling revealed he had been suffering from a severe neck injury going into the matchup. This is the very reason Sterling chose not to give Yan an immediate rematch. Instead, he took the time off to go through with the surgery for his chronic neck ailment.
Having had a successful surgery, Sterling believes he will now display his true potential against his adversary. Either way, one can expect the rematch to be an exciting affair come fight night.
