Two years ago, in January, the sports world was devastated by the tragic news of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter’s passing in a helicopter crash. Bryant’s tragic demise heavily affected even the MMA community. Among them was the former two-division champion, Conor McGregor.

While talking to CBS on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, ‘The Notorious’ expressed his grief about Bryant’s accident. He also talked about the mental toll the incident took on him.
“It’s very, very sad news. It’s iconic that I’m here, and he used to play in this arena, as well, right? So just very sad news. Lost his daughter, as well… It’s kind of hard to get up for it, for this event,” McGregor said.

“I’m very happy to be here, but I’m sad at the same time.… just a very sad time. For me, the first time I ever came to America, Kobe was one of the big stars and one of the men that jumped out,” he added.

“We don’t really understand basketball too much back home, but Kobe, his star, transcends sport, and a great man. I would have loved to meet him. It’s a very sad day,” McGregor concluded.
The UFC star was so much affected by the news that he didn’t even celebrate one of the biggest achievements of his career, which was a victory over Donald Cerrone in the welterweight division on January 18, 2020.

McGregor’s win over Cerrone marked his second victory in the 170 lbs division. The Irishman has a relatively good record in the welterweight category than the lightweight.

He previously lost one fight and won the next against Nate Diaz in 2016. Hence, he has a 2-1 record in the 170 lbs roster. Meanwhile, McGregor has a 1-3 record in the 155 lbs division.

Now, after a two-fight skid in the UFC, ‘The Notorious’ is interested in making a comeback in the welterweight. Since he has had a good history in this division, we might see him turning the tables around this time and getting back to winning ways.
