One of the most popular referees in the sport of MMA, Mike Beltran, has been out of action for a year now. But the fans of the sport may soon get to witness the American once again back in action.

Known for his iconic mustache, Beltran began his refereeing career way back in 2004. In his almost two-decades-long career, he has been seen with some big promotions, including UFC, Bellator, and Cage Warriors. However, the 50-year-old’s time inside the MMA cage came to a halt as he underwent surgery to treat his diverticulitis a year ago. But it looks like Beltran is now recovered and ready to make a comeback.

In one of his recent posts, MMA referee Mike Beltran shared a heartfelt message sharing his journey to recover from his surgery for diverticulitis. In the post, the veteran thanked his wife and ‘The Treigning Lab’ gym. Apart from this, he also teased a possible comeback to the sport after a year-long layoff.

Along with the picture showcasing his experience, Beltran wrote: “After being out for a year recovering from my surgery with diverticulitis and having a foot of my colon taken out, I am blessed to be back in the cage. Last night was my first show back. Thank you to my wife who nursed me back to health and the @treigning_lab. I’m back!”

A former US Marine, Mike Beltran got his MMA bug back in 2002. But before embracing his role as a referee, the American tried his hand at fighting. However, after limited success in his previous endeavor, Beltran transitioned to refereeing, a role that he is most well-known for. In his more than two decades’ worth of time in the sport, he has been part of some high-profile matches. This includes Nate Diaz’s final UFC bout against Tony Ferguson.

A similar health condition ended Brock Lesnar’s time with UFC and MMA

Before Mike Beltran, former UFC champion and pro wrestling star Brock Lesnar also went through diverticulitis surgery. It was first revealed that he had been going through the painful inflammation back in 2009, after Dana White revealed it during the post-fight press conference of UFC 105. A year later, the fighter had to undergo surgery to address the issue, which canceled his destined bout with Junior dos Santos at UFC 131.

In 2011, the ‘Beast Incarnate’ would return to action against Alistair Overeem. But from the get-go, the effects of the surgery could be seen on the former NCAA wrestler. This fight would also prove to be Lesnar’s last fight for the UFC until his comeback against Mark Hunt at UFC 200. Nevertheless, hopefully, this wouldn’t be the case with Beltran, given the much less physically demanding nature of a referee compared to a fighter.
