Currently, the UFC lightweight division has no champion after ‘Do Bronx’ vacated the belt because of a controversial weight miss at UFC 274. However, he defeated the challenger Justin Gaethje via submission in the first round and cemented his position as a viable prospect for the title.

The 155lbs division currently has some of the best fighters in the promotion, including the ten-fight win streak holder Islam Makhachev. Despite that, the Brazilian wants to see McGregor inside the cage next to solidify his financial status.

“If I must choose, that would be Conor McGregor. It’s the guy who is putting the money on my bank account. So if I’m gonna choose, I’m gonna choose Conor McGregor,” Oliveira told MMA Junkie.

“The story with Conor has always been like that. It was the same thing when he fought Dustin Poirier. He always cuts the line and everyone knows that it happens when Conor is on. He cuts the line,” he added.

“I think I deserve to choose and I’m choosing Conor because of everything I’ve done to make some money for my family and for everything. If I’m going to choose, I’m choosing Conor.” Oliveira concluded.

Why would Charles Oliveira not fight Islam Makhachev next?

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protégé Islam Makhachev has had a long undefeated run in the division. Therefore, Makhachev believes he deserves a shot at the lightweight gold next more than anyone else.

Even his entire team is backing him up and demanding the same from the company. However, ‘Do Bronx’ is unfazed by their call-outs. In an interview, he said, “I’ve never ran from a fight and the lightweight champion is called Charles Oliveira. Is Islam a very tough guy? Yep. Did he fight big names? No. He’s on a big streak, but who did he fight?”

According to the Brazilian, even though Makhachev has a good win streak, his list doesn’t include big names. Hence, he wants Makhachev to bag one more win against a top contender to earn a title shot.
