“He Had a Machete and a Gun”: MMA Coach Opens Up About Scary Past Experience While Working as a Bodyguard

The world of MMA is filled with some of the craziest stories. Each fighter has had their fair share of tough times in life. Many of them have struggled their way through it. These stories are shared by some of the coaches, too. Moreover, sometimes even their coaches face a near-death experiences during their earlier days. Such is the world of MMA. One such story is revealed by Alexander Volkanovski‘s coach in a recent interview with ‘Submission Radio’ ahead of a risky match at UFC 284. The coach shared some more interesting details about his previous line of work.

Joe Lopez once had a guy pull a gun and a machete on him

The veteran coach shared a really scary story on the podcast. Lopez shared one of his stories working in a pub wherein he ejected a guy. He said, “He had a machete and a gun… He got ejected and you know when the cops finally caught him… He’d been ejected and he came back but he was smashing things on the way down to the pub to try and get us. And on the way down the cops stopped him and it was a standoff between him and the cops.”

The veteran coach continued, “Finally, he dropped the gun, and I had to go to the court as a police witness and everything else… We ejected him and everything else he was actually throwing glasses inside…

Further shedding light on the subject, the UFC coach added, “I had just seen some glasses flying around. And I finally figured out who was throwing them and I grabbed him and I threw him out. The police were there, and they told him to go away. He didn’t take it lightly, and he came back with a machete and a gun.”

Joe Lopez shares his experience of body guarding a celebrity

Joe Lopez disclosed that he worked as a bodyguard for celebrities such as ‘Rage against the Machine’, Run DMC, and ‘The Ramone’. Furthermore, the MMA coach shared how it was different back in his day. He said “It was different. I think people were, I guess, less accountable because you know no one was standing there videoing. So people more a lot more themselves and you’d see that their personalities. I mean, there are so many different stories, you know…”

It seemed that the veteran coach was focused on the job at his hands as he couldn’t remember much of the details. This would be good news for Alexander Volkanovski, who will be looking to become a double champion at UFC 284.
