A decade ago, Dagestan was not really on MMA fans’ minds as a place that raises the best fighters on the planet. But a decade later, things have taken a 360-degree turn. The rise of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov has not only stamped his legacy in the world of MMA, but it has also opened doors for other Dagestani fighters.
After his retirement, Khabib’s protege Islam Makhachev continues to be the flagbearer of UFC’s best. Now, with Khabib’s cousin Umar Nurmagomedov also rising in the UFC rankings, no one can doubt that Dagestani fighters are here to stay in MMA. Recently, Umar Nurmagomedov appeared in an interview and compared the wrestling styles of Khabib and Islam Makhachev.

According to Umar, Islam’s game is focused on choking his opponents and changing positions. He uses a chase-like strategy, where he plays with his opponents, trying to tire them out before going for the finish. “Between Khabib and Islam, in the grappling and his game, I think Islam try to choke you. Islam try to change position, and Islam doing like chase you know, he play with you,” Umar said.

On the other hand, Khabib’s game is all about smashing his opponents. He doesn’t give them any space and tries to make them tired, ultimately finishing them off. “But Khabib’s game, Khabib smash you! (Khabib) He tried to do with you everything. He grab you, and he don’t wanna give you any space. He make you tired, and kill (you).”
