Daniel Cormier is one of the few fighters in the history of UFC to hold two UFC titles. He also fought in the Strikeforce and won the Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament. The Olympian has achieved many great things inside the octagon. However, these days, he is doing exceptional work as an MMA analyst and a color commentator.
Recently, on his show, DC and RC, Cormier had said something that did not go well with ‘The Bad Guy’. DC had pointed out that people claim Israel Adesanya as the best middleweight fighter in the history of UFC, though their conclusion results from the recency bias.

Cormier suggested that Anderson Silva is still the greatest middleweight fighter to grace the octagon. People are forgetting how dominant ‘The Spider’ was during his reign.
To this, Chael Sonnen, former middleweight challenger, gave his view and said, “What in the bleep is Daniel Cormier talking about, there is nothing on that, that is accurate. There is no way that Daniel believes it, except Daniel fought Anderson Silva and would like to pad his own resume so he wants to have beaten the greatest of all time, is all I can think.”
However, if we look at just the pure stats, we may find that Daniel Cormier is actually making sense. However, ‘The Bad Guy’ has fought ‘The Spider‘ twice, so his opinion certainly matters in this debate about who is the middleweight GOAT in the UFC.
Daniel Cormier or Chael Sonnen, who is right?
Anderson Silva had stacked a 16 fight win streak in the UFC and still holds the record of most title defenses in UFC middleweight history with 10 defenses. As good as Adesanya has looked, he only has 3 title defenses to his name.
Also, Silva has multiple UFC wins at the light heavyweight division. And at the time these two fought at UFC 234, Anderson Silva had passed his prime. Yet, Silva looked great in the fight and won one round.
Many see that fight as the passing of the torch. Thus, we should not consider that fight when comparing their resumes.
The sport has grown a lot, but ‘The Spider’ was ahead of his time already. He beat his opponents with relative ease and made them look amateur.
Silva is still the longest-reigning champion in UFC history with 2,457 days.

Whereas ‘The Last Stylebender’ has only four years inside the octagon. He had looked unbeatable and was on his way to superstardom, but failed to grab the opportunity against the Polish Jan Blachowicz. Though he is still the champion in the middleweight division, he does not have the era of invincibility around him.
In conclusion, ‘The Spider’ stills holds an edge, but Adesanya can change this by winning a couple of more fights and he is on the right track.
