Most viewers of the noted UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan’s podcast, may have witnessed discussions about either goofy or serious topics. But they may agree that Rogan and his guests have got emotional only a handful of times. Fans witnessed one such rare ‘JRE’ moment when the noted first-ever female UFC champion, Ronda Rousey, made an appearance on Rogan’s podcast. However, that is far from being the only one.

Rogan also couldn’t hold himself back from shedding a tear or two while he had the noted former UFC Welterweight champ, Kamaru Usman, on his podcast. The two talked about how Usman won the UFC Welterweight gold from the then champ, Tyron ‘T-Wood’ Woodley in a 2019 episode of ‘JRE’. However, it was the mention of ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’s’ meeting with Woodley’s mom that had both of them tearing up.

The sporting spirit of Tyron Woodley’s mom was endearing

In the four-year-old video, it was Rogan who started discussing Usman’s win over Woodley that made him the UFC Welterweight champ. However, they also couldn’t help talking about a moment that happened after the fight. Usman mentioned that he wouldn’t have selected Woodley to snatch the belt from if he had the choice. He also described a meeting with ‘T-Wood’s mother, Deborah Woodley, where he had sat with her “for hours” and talked.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ also revealed that he really didn’t feel like celebrating his victory over Woodley. However, he broke down even after his victory when he witnessed Woodley’s mom going backstage in an upset mood. The cameras caught an emotional moment when Usman also went backstage and cried loudly while hugging Woodley’s mother, Deborah.

Even Rogan couldn’t help appreciating Deborah Woodley’s, “It’s all good baby” response toward Usman. He further detailed how it isn’t easy for any mother to react in a sporting manner to the one who had just beaten up his son. Rogan said, “It’s her baby who lost”.

Still, the sporting spirit that Deborah showcased towards Usman showcases her true character. The noted Young Jamie of ‘JRE’ also pulled up the video on the screen breaking the tear-gates of both Rogan and Usman’s eyes.

But ultimately, it was proven that Usman’s prowess in wrestling was far superior to what his rival possessed. The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
