Top-ranked welterweight contender Leon Edwards spoke to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn and spoke out on a divisional rival. ‘Rocky’ broke down his intention to fight Jorge Masvidal, with whom he shares a well-documented distaste. Edwards and Masvidal had a backstage run-in that ended with ‘Gamebred’ sucker punching Leon in the face.
The backstage brawl took place after Jorge’s massive win at UFC Fight Night: London, where he decapitated Darren Till. Masvidal drew blood from Leon’s face with the unexpected punch and ‘Rocky’ has been keen to run things back.

Leon Edwards goes in on fighting Jorge Masvidal
Edwards told MMA Junkie that the first fight he wanted to scoop up after he won the belt was against Jorge. What’s more, considering the unresolved conclusion to their backstage brawl, it’s understandable why he’d want to run things back.

“I’d like to fight Masvidal though after I get the title. I think Masvidal now would have no other excuse. He’s made every excuse in the book now not to fight me, you know what I mean. I would like to run that one back first.”
Additionally, the Englishman pulled back the curtains and explained that the fight wasn’t too close to being drawn up. From Leon’s perspective, being the ‘BMF’ of the UFC would entail settling all scores, and he’s certainly pushing for the fight.

“It was discussed a little bit, but he just keeps turning it down. I don’t know what’s wrong with the kid. He talks all this…he’s the BMF, but he’s always turned fights down. This is a big fight for him. It’s been mentioned, but he keeps saying no to the fight, cannot force a man to fight.”
If Leon Edwards is successful in his campaign to capture welterweight gold, Jorge Masvidal will likely be enticed to fight. At the box office, ‘Gamebred’ is a considerably bigger draw, and that’s the projected reason as to why he’s shown fleeting interest to fight Edwards. Leon will face Khamzat Chimaev on December 19, 2020, and that will definitely help raise his profile considerably.
