UFC fighter Randy Brown opened up about his father’s incarceration during his recent appearance on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Brown, who recently achieved a victory against Wellington Turman at UFC Fight Night: Topuria vs Emmet, shared details about his upbringing, growing up with his father in jail, and his journey from Jamaica to the UFC.

He expressed the importance of his father’s presence in his life despite his incarceration and discussed the values he wants to instill in his own children as he continues his MMA career.

Randy Brown reveals how his father can still watch his fights from prison

During the interview, Brown disclosed that his father has been incarcerated since he was two years old, resulting in his ability to watch his fights solely when they are televised on linear TV.

He disclosed that his father is currently in Lewisburg. And although they have limited physical contact, they maintain regular communication through phone calls and visits. Whenever Brown would visit America during the summers, he made sure to see his father in jail.

Providing further context, Brown explained that his father’s incarceration was the result of being charged under the RICO Act due to involvement in organized crime. The charges against him included drug trafficking, robbery, extortion, and other criminal activities. Ultimately, he received three life sentences as a consequence.

However, Brown mentioned that his father has a parole hearing coming up in the summer. And that he has had positive behavior during his time in prison for the past 20 years. He has been actively participating in mentoring and other programs. Which according to him, shows a significant transformation and devotion to a changed life centered around religion. Brown firmly believes that his father deserves the opportunity to spend quality time with his family, including his grandchildren.

RICO act and what it means for Brown’s father and others implicated under it

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), was passed in 1970. And was created to thwart organized crime.

One notable and widely known case involving the application of the RICO Act is the John Gotti vs. United States case. When authorities indicted John Gotti, a notorious gang member and leader of the Gambino crime family in New York City, in 1990, he faced multiple charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

This high-profile trial was referred to as “The Trial of the Century” by the media. It commenced in 1992 and lasted for several months.

The case against John Gotti illustrates how the RICO Act can effectively dismantle criminal syndicates. It is also potent to secure convictions against prominent criminals. It highlights the power and effectiveness of the RICO Act in combating organized crime and bringing influential criminals to justice.
