Perhaps one of the most exciting title fights of the year, Dustin Poirier vs Charles Oliveira is going to take place at UFC 269. Arguably one of the most competitive divisions in the UFC, the lightweight division has been in a logjam for quite some time.
Following the rematch with Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier had two options. A trilogy fight against the UFC’s cash cow (McGregor), or a title fight, so he could finally get his hands on UFC gold. As we all know, the Louisiana native chose the former and now has two dominant victories against ‘The Notorious.
A former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier is at the precipice of becoming one of the most decorated lightweights in UFC history. However, getting past Charles Oliveira, who has matured into a complete fighter, will be a daunting task.

Interestingly, in a recent interview with Helen Yee, featherweight contender Brian Ortega gave his prediction for this matchup, making the following statement.
“I love Poirier. I’ve fought with him since New Orleans. We’ve fought on the same cards, we’ve won together. Like we had a thing where I’m like yo every time we fight together we win. So I see him, I’m a Poirier fan, he deserves it, he’s such a good human being. Both guys are, you know, but I go more to who I like. You know, who I like, who I know, and who I’ve seen, and I go for Poirier.”
Both Brian Ortega and Poirier are long-time friends that fought together on the regional MMA circuit in the USA. Perhaps that is why he is hoping to see Poirier become a champion. He attempts to do the same against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266.
Dustin Poirier vs Charles Oliveira
Holding the record for the most finishes and submissions in the UFC, Charles Oliveira is on a nine-fight win streak in the lightweight division. If anything, Oliveira has proved he is one of the most well-rounded fighters in the division, with wins against Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee, and recently Michael Chandler.

On the other hand, ‘The Diamond’ is on a three-fight win-streak of his own. Going into this matchup, Dustin Poirier will have an advantage in terms of his punching power, but that’s where the buck stops.
Charles Oliveira will have the height and reach advantage and will look to keep Poirier at range. Moreover, taking down Oliveira might not be the best option, considering his exceptional grappling ability.
Undoubtedly, an extremely intriguing matchup, Dustin Poirier vs Charles Oliveira has the potential to be one of the most exciting title fights in lightweight history.
