At UFC 289, the stage is set for the clash of the two most prolific grapplers in MMA, Charles Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush. This will be the first time that the Brazilian will be seen in the octagon, ever since his loss to Islam Makhachev last year. Although nothing is official yet, many believe this bout to be a title eliminator. Something which both the fighters have shown their faith in.

Amidst this upcoming clash, former UFC star, Daniel Cormier, has special advice for Charles Oliveira. According to the former Olympian, The Brazilian fighter should be more careful this time. But at the same time shouldn’t forget what made him the champion in the first place. In other words, Cormier wants his former colleague to be more alert this time but shouldn’t abandon his high pressure. Something which Oliveira has done in the past in a winning effort against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. ‘DC’ made this statement on his podcast DC&RC, which he hosts alongside former footballer Ryan Clark aka RC. Further, DC applauded ‘Do Bronx’s growth as a fighter. Reflecting his time at the featherweight, when the fighter got finished multiple times. Considering his performance in the last few years, one can clearly see how much the lightweight has grown as a fighter. In Cormier’s words,

“I’m asking him to be a little bit safer, but I’m also asking him not to forget what made him that guy. Because you remember, every fight, Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje, they would always say that we’re going to remind Charles Oliveira he’s that kid that used to quit when he was at 145.”

In his last fight, Charles Oliveira started out strong, going toe to toe against Islam Makhachev. But despite this, the fighter went reckless in the second, got tagged, and finished with an arm-triangle choke. Even though Oliveira has been in a similar situation in his previous fights, his reputation on the ground made his opponent stay away in order to avoid his guard. This gave him the crucial moments to recover and turn the tables in his favor. But unlike his previous matchups, Makhachev is known for his top-notch ground game. He didn’t resist going against a downed Oliveira and sealed the victory. Considering Dariush’s grappling background, this is something that ‘Do Bronx’ needs to keep in mind going into his next UFC bout.

AT UFC 280, Charles Oliveira didn’t just lose his UFC gold but one of the longest win streaks in the promotion’s history. In his more than a decade UFC long career, ‘Do Bronx’ has secured over 22 wins inside the octagon. This Sunday, when the Brazilian will enter the cage, he may have a chance to increase this record even further. Among active fighters, only Jim Miller comes to close to this record with 17 finishes. Apart from this, the Brazilian also has 21 wins to his name, and another win will inch him toward Miller’s 25 wins record. While this is a great chance for Oliveira to be GOATed in the record books, this might not be easy considering Beneil Dariush’s current form.
