UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski (25-2) appeared on Michael Bisping (30-9) and Anthony Smith’s (36-18) Believe You Me podcast to talk about the upcoming UFC 290 scheduled for July 9th where he will face challenger and Interim Featherweight Champion Yair Rodriguez (16-3) for the Championship.

During the podcast, Bisping asked Volkanovski about his back-and-forth with Conor McGregor (22-6) on Twitter. And Volkanovski had some interesting things to say about it.

It’s something I’ve always wanted- Alexander Volkanovski on fighting Conor

While answering Bisping’s question on his Twitter spat with Conor McGregor, which started with the Australian offering to fight McGregor at lightweight, the Australian expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of a fight with Conor.

Yeah, it’s something that I’ve always wanted purely because as you just said… he’s a former featherweight Champion.”

‘Alexander The Great’ believes a win over McGregor- arguably the most famous UFC fighter ever- would be a legacy-making fight for him.

He’s the only one I haven’t beat yet so uh you talk about Legacy that’s definitely there but I mean Conor is definitely something I want to do yeah um I think he’s uh even a little interested in it so we’ll see.

The Australian has seen his popularity rise recently, despite a unanimous loss to Lightweight Champion Islam Makachev in his last fight. The fight against Conor, however, still seems a long way off. Even Conor’s scheduled fight with Michael Chandler on December 16 appears to be in doubt.

I finish him in the second or third round: Volkanovski

Volkanovski said he hopes to “have a couple of fights and then fight him” in an interview with The Sporting News. Conor last fought against Dustin Poirier back in 2021, when he broke his leg, and has been recovering since.

UFC Anti-Doping policies require a fighter to enter the USADA testing pool and give at least two negative samples before being eligible to fight. But the ‘Notorious’ has not given a sample to USADA since the third quarter of 2021, according to the USADA website, which puts his clash with Chandler in major doubt.

But the Australian doesn’t mind waiting for what could be the biggest fight of his career. In the same interview, he expressed confidence in a quick victory over McGregor, should they face each other. “I think he gasses himself pretty quickly and I finish him in the second or third round, I reckon” he said.
