Joe Rogan has had several athletes on his podcast. One such guest was Ronnie Coleman, who had been Mr. Olympia eight times. He is also an International Sports Hall of Fame member. On the podcast, they discussed the injuries and subsequent surgeries Coleman had to go through.

In addition to this, Colman also served in the Texas police force for over a decade. Hence, he spoke his mind about the demands of such a job.

In ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, episode #1489, Coleman said (h/t BarBend), “Hiring the wrong people for the job. That job is so stressful. You have to be real confident in your abilities to protect yourself and I was very, very confident. I never even had to use my nightstick on anybody…That job isn’t for everybody.”

Interestingly, his initial plan was not to become a police officer or a bodybuilder. Instead, he majored in accounting and since he could not find work in his area of studies, he became an officer. He served for 11 years (1989-2000) as a cop and later as a reserve officer till 2003.

However, a fellow officer introduced him to ‘Metroflex Gym’ and that’s where his journey of bodybuilding commenced. While Coleman had to be initially convinced by the gym’s owner, getting a free membership was enough a push for him to consider entering the competition.

It wasn’t long before he found success. He won several competitions, like Mr. Texas (1990), Mr. Universe title (1991), and his first Mr. Olympia (1998). However, after years of putting his body through the most rigorous training, Coleman also experienced injuries.

On the JRE podcast, Coleman revealed he had 13 surgeries. However, the injuries went way back when he was powerlifting in high school; he had hurt his back. Later on, he hurt his back and neck while playing football in college.

Around the year 1996, he experienced a herniated disc that got worse over time. Hence, his surgeries included the back, neck, and hips. One of the major procedures was a hip-replacement surgery.

However, despite this, Coleman hasn’t stopped working out. Rogan found it inspiring that the ex-cop was still pursuing what he loves.
