Something is cooking in the kitchen of the UFC. The promotion seems to be looking to add a new division, but at what weight class? Well, UFC is looking at a potential run at ‘the 165’ lbs division and the Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler might be the perfect starter match for the new division according to the former dual weight champion, Daniel Cormier.

Dana White announced that the comeback clash between McGregor and Chandler would be happening at the ‘170 lbs zone but there are talks and leaks that it might be under the new division as well. Nonetheless, Daniel Cormier’s ‘165’ lbs assessment seems to have caught the attention of both Joe Rogan and BMF champ, Max Holloway. What did they talk about, you ask? Let’s find out.

UFC 303 would witness the comeback of Conor McGregor in the Octagon yet again after an exile of three years due to injury. Their clash is set to happen in the welterweight division but according to Cormier, it would be better for the promotion if they fight in the ‘Superlightweight’ division. “I believe that if they’re going to do a 165-pound division, it should have a name attached to the weight class that is so big that it draws people’s attention,” said Cormier in a conversation with the media.

Cormier’s remarks have sparked some debate among MMA fans, who are now discussing the likelihood of a new division in the UFC. Likewise, Joe Rogan and Max Holloway appear to be intrigued by DC’s words. Rogan in his latest podcast ‘JRE MMA Show’ #155,  had the opportunity to sit down with UFC 300 fame, Max Holloway. While having a conversation about cutting weight Rogan asked Holloway what is his opinion about the rumors surrounding the new super lightweight division. “I know DC’s been saying this. I don’t know what he knows,” said Rogan.

Responding to Rogan, Holloway added that if ‘DC’ has said something about a super lightweight division then there must be some truth to it considering the fact that he seldom gives half-truths in MMA. “You know, DC, you’ve been in a lot of fights with him. You know him as a person. Brother, he doesn’t talk about anything unless he knows something is going on. Brother, it’s either that’s what I’m thinking. Yeah, it’s either he knows something is going on, or he’s just bullshi**ing. So it’s either it’s one or the other. He never ever plays the middle,” said Holloway.

Rogan responded to Holloway’s words by stating that Cormier seldom states anything without any proper evidence “I doubt he’s bulls**ting.” The rumors about the new division have heated up since a lightweight fighter, Rafael Fiziev claimed he heard people deep within the UFC discussing it, and Daniel Cormier’s words have now made it the talk of the town.

But what exactly did Cormier say? Let’s find out.

Cormier is hellbent on making the super lightweight division

Daniel Cormier has a deep understanding of the sport and his existence as an analyst in the UFC has increased the charm of the promotion. It must be noted that his seat in the UFC’s analysis wing gives him the opportunity to gain insider knowledge much before anyone else and seems like his latest take on the super lightweight division has caught the attention of the community.

In a conversation in ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’, Cormier explained why the McGregor-Chandler fight might act as a catalyst for a new division despite White’s claim that they would fight at welterweight. He explained that being at the right place and at the right time under the right circumstances could prove to be wonders. “We see it happening where, if you’re in the right place at the right time under the right circumstances, sometimes it happens faster,” said Cormier.

He further added, “Conor McGregor is that name. Michael Chandler, on the other hand, will benefit from being in the right place at the right time, where these guys would then fight for the super lightweight championship of the world because that’s what I believe it is.” The inception of a new weight class in the promotion might or might not happen.
