Coach John Kavanagh used to give tickets to his fighters so that they can sell them to their acquaintances. The fighters kept some commission on the tickets and handed over the rest to the coach. Although after his big defeat, McGregor told Kavanagh that he had forgotten the money at home and will bring it to the gym next week. Little did Kavanagh know that week was too far away.

What did Coach Kavanagh say about Conor McGregor?

Although Kavanagh never lost his patience with McGregor’s financial condition, the scam was a bit extreme. According to him, his gym was not doing well at that time. On top of all, McGregor ran away, owing him a lot of money.

Conor had taken 25 tickets at €20 each, so we’re talking €500 worth of tickets,” said Kavanagh in his book ‘Win or Learn’. The week promised by McGregor eventually became a month. Consequently, the coach stopped calling him, “eventually, I gave up on calling him.”

After all, there is only so much that a man can bear. Considering the condition of his gym at the time, Kavanagh’s action is understandable.

The Irish coach also confessed that he acknowledged McGregor’s disappointment. “Parents and other loved ones are often worried about fighters getting badly hurt, but that’s never the primary concern for the fighters themselves. Their main issue is that they don’t want to be embarrassed in front of people they know.” Said Kavanagh.

How did McGregor resurface from the trauma?

After the defeat, McGregor lost his will and passion for fighting in the cage. Even though he could’ve won, his overconfidence made him lose against Sitenkov. What bothered him was that he lost the match in the presence of his loved ones. More than a month passed, and coach Kavanagh received a call. It was from the McGregor household. Rather than the caller being ‘The Notorious’, it was his mother.

She explained on the call how McGregor has lost his way and only Kavanagh can set him straight. Although the coach didn’t owe the young Irishman anything, he went to check on him. He couldn’t find it in his heart to say ‘no’ to a mother looking out for her son. After visiting, he found a McGregor he never imagined. The young fighter was not in a healthy state at all. However, John Kavanagh believed in McGregor and made him do the same.
