Merab Dvalishvili put out a tweet captioned, “Another F**king Early Stoppage! I pray that me or my teammates don’t have Mark Goddard in the cage again. We are FIGHTERS … let us fight til the end ! #UFC292”. The tweet was directed at Marc Goddard who refereed the title match. ‘The Machine’ Dvalishvili accused the experienced referee of stepping in too early, possibly not allowing Aljamain to continue the fight, the way he had intended to.

However, fans and other critics online have assigned very personal reasons for Merab’s outbursts. A significant part of the online community believed that Sean O’Malley performed well, outdoing Sterling. They also responded to the fiery tweet saying that Marc Goddard is an experienced referee and was in fact, one of the best men to carry out the job. After Sean dropped ‘The Funkmaster’ with a well-timed right hand, he let loose a barrage of unopposed hammerfists. Well into this onslaught, Marc stepped in to call the fight.

The relationship between Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili

Merab’s dismissal of the victory could possibly stem from his bond with Aljamain, although one cannot be certain. But it is interesting to consider this existing dynamic between ‘The Funkmaster’ and ‘The Machine’. The Georgian powerhouse is Sterling’s friend and training partner. They both attend the Serra-Longo Fight Club and have shared a strong bond outside the Octagon for years. Dvalishvili has also previously credited Sterling for his accomplishments as well.

However, they also remarked, “It’s a great stoppage”. Refereeing a match is no easy task and any decision is subject to human error.
