Alex Pereira could not keep his UFC momentum going after suffering a knockout loss at the hands of Israel Adesanya. The Brazilian powerhouse got stopped in his tracks at UFC 287 and has since then announced a move up to light heavyweight.

However, former middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier believes Pereira will have a hard time getting his hands on Jamahal Hill‘s light heavyweight title. The 39-year-old was talking to MMA reporter Helen Yee when he gave his thoughts on the freshly dethroned former middleweight champion.

Jared Cannonier on Alex Pereira fighting at 205 lbs

Jared Cannonier was willing to give Alex Pereira a fair chance at light heavyweight as long as his grappling held up. In a conversation with Helen Yee Sports, the former title challenger said ‘Poatan’ could do some damage in the 205 lbs division if he improved his grappling and takedown defense.

Speaking of Pereira potentially becoming the 205 lbs champion, Cannonier said, “Oh, he absolutely could, but Jamahal Hill is a dog up there. There are some killers up there. Jiri [Prochazka] is up there.”

He continued, “But Jamahal Hill, being the champ, I think he’s shown the world a lot with his abilities in the octagon. So I think it’s gonna be hard for Alex to take it away from him and I think that the challenges that people would present to Jamahal Hill, he would be more than happy to rise above and squash them. So, it will be exciting to see how things play out in that division.”

Alex Pereira is not a stranger to the light heavyweight division. Back in Glory kickboxing, he was a champion in the division and the first Glory two-division champion. However, there’s a day and night difference between kickboxing and MMA.
