

Finding an opponent for Jack Della Maddalena wasn’t a walk in the park for the UFC. But finally, he did end up fighting UFC newcomer Bassil Hafez in UFC Vegas 77 co-main event. Maddalena won the fight via a close split decision, which sparked intense debates among the entire MMA community. Many pundits and fans joined together to express their thoughts that Hafez had won the fight.
Maddalena was originally supposed to fight Sean Brady at UFC 290. But the UFC veteran pulled out of the event due to an undisclosed injury. Next, he was pitted against Josiah Harrell, who opted out because of being diagnosed with Moyamoya disease. Finally, UFC found the right opponent for him in Hafez.

Even after showing up to the UFC Vegas 77 on short notice, Hafez was able to deliver above everyone’s expectations. He had Maddalena in trouble on several occasions, but the judges apparently did not think he did enough. After the fight, Hafez came out and spoke his heart out about the loss.

I thought I won the fight, I definitely still could have done more.”

He candidly spoke of the grueling challenge of cutting weight for the fight. Moreover, the UFC debutant emphasized that this setback marked only the inception of his promising journey. With great anticipation, he eagerly looked forward to a future opportunity for a comprehensive training camp and a more effective weight-cutting regimen.

“One of the toughest weight cuts of my life, and I still showed up, made weight, I fought my heart out. I love all my fans, all my people, thank you. This is just the beginning. Can’t wait to get a full camp and a proper weight cut.”
In a show of sportsmanship, Hafez extended congratulations to Maddalena, commending him as an extraordinary adversary with exceptional striking prowess. “Congrats to Jack! He is a beast and his striking is on point. I showed that I can take his punches. Maybe we will meet again in the future.”
