The noted UFC champs, Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski, will clash against each other at UFC 294 in a few hours later. But fans also remember their previous encounter. Although the UFC 284 fight between the two champs was nothing short of enthralling, the post-fight scenes took an untoward turn. It was the noted UFC lightweight, Dan Hooker, who initially accused the victor of the bout, Makhachev, of using an IV to regain his body mass.

Subsequent proceedings saw ‘Volk’s’ fight camp singing a similar tune. Although ‘The Great’ never accused Makhachev directly, he did take a few verbal shots at the Dagestani at different points in time. However, in a recent interview with ‘FOX Sports’, Makhachev revealed that it just took a few words for him to convince the USADA that he entered the fight absolutely clean.

Islam Makhachev didn’t have any fear of getting caught

The ‘FOX Sports’ reporter started the discussion about this IV issue with a question for the current UFC lightweight champ. He asked, Are you disappointed with how his team carried on after the fight? Is there a bit of bad blood now? With what he was saying about the IV?”

Makhachev couldn’t help agreeing with the reporter. He expressed a bit of disappointment since these accusations were coming from a fighter himself. The Dagestani said, I understand if somebody else say. But his team say this. Like all these guys fighters. They know how the USADA check us all the time”. Makhachev also revealed that he received a phone call from the USADA after the fight, owing to all of this “drama”.

But he also implied that he was pretty confident in his approach with the USADA. Makhachev revealed the words that he spoke on the call with the USADA official. He said, “I tell the USADA, where I live in the hotel, you have cameras everywhere. In the lobby, first floor, elevator, close to my room. You can check if someone come to my room for IV.”

Looking at Makhachev’s confidence with which he answered the questions, a lot of fans might form the opinion that he didn’t use any unfair means for his victory. The USADA also didn’t place any more restrictions on Makhachev related to this issue.

Will Islam Makhachev be able to repeat his feat at UFC 294?

The time isn’t too far away when the UFC world will have the exact answer to this question. But till then, we can definitely make some assumptions. Most fans may agree that the first showdown between the Dagestani and ‘The Great’ was a neck-to-neck affair. But ‘Volk’ is known for his superb fight IQ. It can be expected that he won’t repeat his previous mistakes this time.

On the other hand, Makhachev also must have prepared all new weapons to take ‘The Great’ by surprise. In the end, it will all come down to which of these fighters can execute their plan better in the given span of 25 minutes. What do you feel? Will it be Makahchev yet again? Or will we hear Bruce Buffer shout “and new”?

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
