“I Was a Khabib Believer” – Chael Sonnen Explains Why Khabib Nurmagomedov Didn’t Break Justin Gaethje’s Arm

It has been a while since Khabib Nurmagomedov retired, but his fans still speak about his fights like they happened yesterday. His grappling skills are still counted among some of the best. However, this time, it is not the fans but Chael Sonnen praising the Dagestani fighter.

Khabib’s fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 was on the news because of what all transpired. Making a reference to the same fight, retired MMA fighter Sonnen explained why exactly ‘The Eagle’ was an extremely dominant fighter.

Sonnen said, “I was a Khabib believer, and I didn’t even know how good he was until he fought Gaethje. So Khabib went to his back, went into an armbar, let the armbar go, which he later says is because he saw Justin’s mother in the front row. And he knew Justin was gonna want to hug his mother after the fight. So he didn’t break his arm.”

Daniel Cormier too threw light on the incident after a conversation with Khabib. Cormier said that Khabib had been watching Gaethje’s interviews before the fight, where he said that he would never tap.

So when the Khabib was ready to submit ‘The Highlight‘ through an armbar, he quickly switched to the triangle choke. This was because Khabib did not want to hurt Gaethje in front of his parents.

Cormier was the first person to reveal this story. Sonnen’s view of what occurred thus backs Cormier’s words. ‘DC’ and Sonnen’s account of this incident would be a piece of great news for Khabib’s fans.
