Kamaru Usman is the pound-for-pound number 1 fighter in the UFC right now. The current UFC welterweight champion has shown his excellence inside the octagon repeatedly. He has gone up against the best in his weight class and is on his way to lapping the entire division.

Usman joined the UFC after defeating Hayder Hassan in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 21. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has been unstoppable since then. He took the UFC by storm and soon challenged Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title. Usman dominated ‘The Chosen One’ and won the fight via a unanimous decision. Since the win, he has defended his title five times and has established himself as one of the greatest to ever do it.

Seeing his dominance, many have contemplated that he will move up a division. However, he has time and again said that he won’t fight his Nigerian brother, Israel Adesanya. ‘The Last Stylebender‘ also has been unstoppable as the middleweight champion, but instead of him, Usman had his eyes on another fight. The welterweight champion was ready to do the unthinkable and move up two weight classes to fight Jan Blachowicz.

In a recent interview with GQ, he said, “I was going to skip Israel and go fight Jan at 205. Because I’m pound-for-pound, I want to prove it. No matter what weight it is, I thought he was a really good matchup for me.”

“I think I would beat him,” he added.

The fight between him and Blachowicz might be on hold for now. The former light heavyweight champion lost to Glover Teixeira at UFC 267.

Colby Covington wants another fight with Kamaru Usman

Colby Covington has proven to be the toughest test of Usman’s career. Both men have gone toe-to-toe twice and produced epic title fights. The champion, Usman, came out on top on both occasions, but ‘Chaos‘ is not done yet.

During the UFC 270 weigh-in show, Covington talked about what he thinks will be next for him after his fight against Jorge Masvidal. If he wins against his former best friend, he expects to fight Usman again. He said, “It puts me right back in line to get another fight with Usman. The people saw in Madison Square Garden and New York City what happened in that fight. I easily won three rounds. I think I won four rounds.”

“There’s no one that’s on his level that can compete with him like I can, so this fight needs to happen again. There needs to be a trilogy because he hasn’t proved that he’s the better fighter. He hasn’t proved that he’s the best welterweight in the world, and there’s still unfinished business there.”

Kamaru Usman and Covington entertained the fans and a third fight between the two will get them excited. Covington will enter the octagon once again on March 5, 2022, and take on Masvidal at UFC 272. It is a grudge match and the MMA community will tune in to watch the former friends go at it.
