After losing the middleweight championship against Israel Adesanya, Robert Whittaker is facing a tumultuous time in his fighting career. At the moment, he has no opponent to return to the UFC octagon. His last fight in the UFC was against Marvin Vettori at UFC Fight Night 209. The bout was held on September 3, 2022. Ever since the fight, Whittaker has been waiting for another opponent. However, it seems that no one wants to fight him. The Reaper was all set to fight Paulo Costa on February 12, 2023, at UFC 284. Nonetheless, ‘The Eraser’ later announced that the fight would not take place as he has not signed any contracts with the UFC. This was the second time Costa withdrew himself from a bout against Whittaker.

UFC booked Whittaker and Costa for UFC on ESPN 22 in April 2021. However, an undisclosed illness caused ‘The Eraser’ to withdraw from the bout, and Kelvin Gastelum later replaced him. When the history was repeated, Whittaker stated that he was not interested in fighting Costa anymore, as he was not a reliable opponent. Moreover, all the effort and expenses get wasted when a bout is canceled at the last moment. Now, former UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier so badly wants to see Whittaker fight. He also compares the current situation of ‘The Reaper’ with his in the past.

Daniel Cormier compares Robert Whittaker’s current situation with his past

In a video uploaded by DC to his YouTube channel, Cormier was having a conversation with UFC welterweight Ben Askren. During the conversation, Cormier talked about whom he wants to see fight next. He said, “I want to see Robert Whittaker. Robert Whittaker is just kind of like on an island with no opportunity to fight nobody… that kind of sucks… I was in that position too, a little bit. Once I had lost the Jones twice. If he didn’t just continue to f*ck up, I was screwed bro. I was scr*wed.

DC believes that Whittaker currently lacks an opponent and is isolated from the rest of the middleweight division. Israel Adesanya, the current middleweight champion, defeated Whittaker twice, resulting in a decline in his fighting career. Whittaker held the No. 2 spot in the middleweight rankings in 2022 and had dropped to 15th in the men’s PFP rankings as of April 18th, 2023.

‘The Reaper’ is not interested in fighting Costa and Chimaev

While speaking on The MMA Hour, ‘The Reaper’ made it clear that he does not ever want Costa as his opponent again. Khamzat Chimaev is another fighter who could possibly face Whittaker, but he is not interested in fighting Chimaev either. Currently, the Australian fighter is searching for someone in the top five rankings. Furthermore, he states that he is not interested in fighting fighters who take fights in a non-serious manner. Instead, he strongly desires to fight any of the top five middleweights who have earned their position through hard work.
