UFC lightweight division is one of the most intriguing divisions in the UFC. Not only the division is filled with world-class fighters, but it also has a star-studded lineup. Chiefly, at the top of the division with names like Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson, Dustin Poirier, etc.

The cause and effect of having such a pecking order; 1. Phenomenal bouts whenever these guys fight 2. Matchmaking is an incoherent task.

In a recent interview with MMA reporter, The Schmo, UFC lightweight, Beneil Dariush spoke about his next opponent barring the next two potential fighters for vacant UFC lightweight gold – Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev.

“If I’m not getting the title shot... I would want either Dustin Poirier or Michael Chandler because I think those are the guys right now… they’re ahead of me. I wouldn’t really wanna go against Justin, we are buddies; Even if I had to, he’s out, right now, for a while,” said #6 ranked UFC lightweight.

Dariush showed that he just wants to fight and doesn’t care about the names. Though he only sees the merit of the opponent, the sport has always been about the storylines. All the fighters in the division at one point or the other have called out ‘The Notorious‘ Conor McGregor for well-known reasons. However, Dariush is not the one to do so.

The #6 lightweight has all the skills required to be a champion in the promotion. However, the fans don’t consider him as a big-name fighter who will pull all the strings, even outside the fighting, to put people in the arena.

Nevertheless, many fighters have built their legacy by grinding and not engaging in verbal spat, and Dariush seems to be one of them.

Why didn’t Beneil Dariush call out Conor McGregor?

‘Benny’ understands ‘The Notorious’ is out of the picture from the lightweight division courtesy of the brutal leg break at UFC 264. Besides, the list of fighters who have called out the ‘face of the fight game’ is too long for him to get a place.

Also, both Poirier and Chandler are looking for big matchups. Yet, the likeliness of Dariush fighting one of these two is more than him stepping against ‘The Mystic Mac.’
