JRE #1836 featured Rogan alongside writer Ryan Holiday, in which the two discussed a cluster of topics. In one segment, Rogan explained why he wanted his kids to practice fighting rather than playing football.

Rogan said, “I would way more like my kids to fight than to play football. Football to me is the scariest one because I, you know, I don’t follow football, but I watch it occasionally. And when I watch those giant super athletes, just running full clip and slamming into each other, that is just car accident after car accident.”

He added, “Then you got to take into account all the ones that happen in high school. All the ones that happened in college and then they… by the time they get to the NFL, they probably are already like severely mentally compromised.”

This report studied chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in NFL and other college football athletes. According to the study, 99% of brains obtained from NFL players had CTE. This number was a little lower for college football players (91%). The study also found that 21% of high school players had CTE.

These numbers shocked Rogan, who called the situation “f**king crazy.” Rogan also pointed out that he saw a similar situation in martial arts. According to him, repeated head damage compromised one’s ability to think. This was why he decided not to go down the route of fighting professionally.
